Bright spot in the conjunctiva, dorsotemporal
Dr. med. vet. Stefan Gesell-May, 2021
The dorsotemporal (backwards towards the temples) conjunctiva is more or less exposed in horses, depending on the position and size of the eyes. In rare cases, mild chronic inflammation can lead to a pigment shift, so that a light pink-looking area "suddenly" becomes visible in the often dark-colored conjunctiva. As long as no raised areas appear, this is not a cause for concern. However, it can be assumed that such pigment shifts lead to areas that are vulnerable to the sun, as the protection of the dark pigment is no longer available at this point and UV radiation can cause damage. So-called actinic damage leads to further inflammation and tumors, usually squamous cell carcinomas. It should be noted that Haflingers are very susceptible to the development of squamous cell carcinomas on the conjunctiva.
In such cases, it is important to wear a fly mask when the sun is shining. So-called UV masks are woven more tightly than standard masks. You have to be careful when it is raining or snowing, as the "pores" can become clogged and your vision can be severely restricted.
